tim woos - here & now
Tim Woos appeared on From The Top at our live taping in Burlington, VT last month as composer, bassoonist, pianist (by wide reputation), astronomer, lead guitarist, sound engineer, boxer and vinyl enthusiast. His Bassoon Quartet featured on the broadcast was so impressive that i inquired as to whether he had any piano music he wanted to share. I was quite taken with a piece he'd written for piano two years prior, at the age of 15, Here & Now. I've since performed it in recital in Albany, NY and at concerts for students in Northridge, CA. I also gave the broadcast premiere as part of our live taping of From The Top at Merrill Auditorium in Portland, ME.on  2010.03.24

Radiohead: Lift @ Englert Theater, Iowa City, IA taping of From the Top, 2010.02.24
Thanks to John Servies for making the acoustic-free zone that is the Englert Theater in Iowa City, IA , the site of our most recent From The Top live taping, a more gratifying space to play. Thanks also to the omniscient mic placement of Berred Oulette and Dan Hallas.
Radiohead has never commercially released Lift, but it's been one of the band's most admired non-album tracks. They've even toured occasionally with two widely differing interpretations of this song, one they played @ Pinkpop in the early 90's, and another, more funereal version they toured briefly in 2003. When I mentioned to Thom Yorke is was playing Lift, and was hewing more towards the earlier version, he said "That's good, 'cause the new one's lame".
It's a great song.
i enjoyed working it up again for this broadcast, and for the next Out of My Hands setlists.

Kuhnau @ Flynn Center, Burlington, VT
great Vermont kids made our From The Top live taping @ Flynn Center, Burlington very special. Renaissance-Man Tim Woos (pianist, rock guitarisst, astronomer, amp and effects pedal builder, composer) contributed his superb Bassoon Quartet Suite, and wwas joined onstage by an orchestra who's played his music and accompanied him in Brahms' First Piano Concerto, the Vermont Youth Orchesstra, who finished the show with Joseph Schwantner's Percussion Concerto.
my half-time offering this week was two movements excertped from the first keyboard sonata ever published in Germany (1690), Johann Kuhnau's Sonata in B-flat, downloadable HERE.
