THE WAY SOME PEOPLE DIE - ross macdonald
this noirist is new to me. my own fault waiting so long to follow up on epigrammatic recommendations from master, ken bruen; even one of his tarnished protagonists treasures his collection of ross macdonald above all else.
this one's a classic: missing daughter at the center of a storm of drugs, the mob, and MURDER.
highly recommended.

IMPERIAL by William T. Vollmann
took me over three weeks, but i've just finished reading this latest monumental work by William T. Vollmann, IMPERIAL, his journalistic/historical study of Imperial County, CA, and its environs on boths sides of the US/Mexican border. having read everything of Vollmann's i found this almost more like his books in his ongoing SEVEN DREAMS series, each novel/prose-fantasy depicting the interaction between indigenous North American peoples and incursions by settlers, explorers, missionaries, from the 14th Century through to the present.
Vollmann is really the James Agee of our time. the book is exhaustive and exhausting, obsessive and compulsory, beautiful and chastening.
for those of you more fictionally inclined, i would steer you to my favorite collection of his short stories (really a cycle), THE RAINBOW STORIES, or his National Book Award-winning chronicle of WWII-era EU, EUROPE CENTRAL, complete with Dmitri Shostakovich as a sort of Leopold Bloom-narrator.
IMPERIAL, though, if you can get into it, is an epoch-making, essential book.

FROM THE TOP wins two Emmy Awards
very proud that our PBS program, 'From The Top Live @ Carnegie Hall' won two Daytime Emmy Awards, one for Best Children's Program and another for Best Multi-Camera Editing. I can still hear Gary Halvorson (director 2nd season) and Don Mischer (producer for both seasons and director on the first) calling the show like a miliary engagement from the trailer. this was passionate and dedicated work on all parts, beautifully executed.
